Leaves of Grass is a very famous poetry collection written by American Poet Walt Whitman. This poetry collection book was first published in 1885. After that author, Walt Whitman spent most of his professional time writing, rewriting and revising this book multiple times until his death. The first edition of this book was a small book of twelve poems and the last was a compilation of over 400. The first edition is particularly notable for its inclusion of the poems “Song of Myself” and “The Sleepers”. Primarily this poetry collection focuses on the body and material world rather than focusing on religious or spiritual matters. Some of the best poetry in this collection are “Song of Myself”, “I Sing the Body Electric”, and “Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking”. The first edition of this book was very small and collected only twelve unnamed poems in 95 pages only. Whitman once said that he wants this book to be small enough to be carried in a pocket. Some popular poems of the first edition included –

  • Song of MySelf
  • A Song of Occupations
  • To Think of Time
  • The Sleepers
  • I Sing the Body Electric
  • Faces
  • Song of the Answerer
  • A Boston Ballad
  • There was a Child Went Forth
  • Great are the Myths

After the first edition of the Leaves of Grass, there have been held to be either six or nine editions of Leaves of Grass. All the new editions were of varying length, each one larger and augmented from the previous version. The final edition of the book includes over 400 poems. I celebrate myself, and sing myself,  And what I assume you shall assume,  For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.  I loafe and invite my soul,  I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass.  My tongue, every atom of my blood, form’d from this soil, this air,  Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their parents the same,  I, now thirty-seven years old in perfect health begin,  Hoping to cease not till death.  Creeds and schools in abeyance,  Retiring back a while sufficed at what they are,  but never forgotten, I harbor for good or bad,  I permit to speak at every hazard,  Nature without check with original energy One’s-self I sing, a simple separate person,  Yet utter the word Democratic, the word En-Masse.  Of physiology from top to toe I sing,  Not physiognomy alone nor brain alone is worthy for the Muse,  I say the Form complete is worthier far,  The Female equally with the Male I sing.  Of Life immense in passion, pulse, and power,  Cheerful, for freest action form’d under the laws divine,  The book Leaves of Grass is written by Walt Whitman. He was an American Poet, Essayist and Journalist who is regarded as one of the most influential poets in the American canon often called the father of free verse.
